90-Day Action Planner
A practical planning tool for turning an important priority into a focused 90-day implementation cycle with clear ownership, milestones, dependencies, and evidence.
This tool is designed for leadership teams, program leads, cross-functional initiatives, and community partnerships that need to move from broad intent into coordinated execution.
Start with the outcome
- Priority: What are we trying to move in the next 90 days?
- Outcome: What will be meaningfully different by the end of the cycle?
- Why now: Why does this matter at this moment?
- Decision: What has already been decided—and what is still unresolved?
Define the boundaries
- What is in scope for this 90-day cycle?
- What is deliberately out of scope?
- Which assumptions are we making?
- What constraints or non-negotiables shape the work?
Choose the few priorities that matter
Limit the cycle to three to five priorities. If everything is a priority, ownership and focus will erode quickly.
- Priority 1: What must move first?
- Priority 2: What directly enables the outcome?
- Priority 3: What risk or dependency must be addressed?
- Optional priorities 4–5: Include only if capacity is realistic.
Assign ownership
- Who is the accountable owner for each priority?
- Who must contribute?
- Who must approve or decide?
- Who needs to be informed?
Map dependencies
- What other decisions must happen first?
- What resources or approvals are required?
- Which partners or teams could delay progress?
- What assumptions could become risks?
Build the 30–60–90 day rhythm
- By Day 30: What must be clarified, decided, launched, or completed?
- By Day 60: What should be visibly underway or producing early evidence?
- By Day 90: What outcome, decision, capability, or implementation milestone should be achieved?
Define evidence of progress
- What would tell us the work is genuinely moving?
- Which measures are leading indicators?
- Which signals would suggest the strategy needs adjustment?
- What should we learn—not just count?
Set a review rhythm
- What will be reviewed weekly?
- What will be reviewed monthly?
- Who can change the plan when evidence changes?
- How will decisions and learning be documented?
Use the planner as a living document
A 90-day plan should create focus without becoming rigid. Revisit priorities, dependencies, and evidence as the organization learns. The goal is disciplined action with enough flexibility to adapt responsibly.
