A MEMOIR IN DEVELOPMENT
Patrick’s Book Project
A story about belonging, opportunity, responsibility, and the communities that make a life possible.
The manuscript follows a journey from Dago Kogelo in western Kenya through Nairobi, Indiana, and Florida. It brings together family, education, sport, migration, community work, entrepreneurship, institutions, and the recurring question of what we owe one another when opportunity reaches us.
The story beneath the work
Before there were professional words for social innovation, systems, strategy, or community development, there were village roads, classrooms, family responsibilities, sports fields, people opening doors, and communities teaching what it means to belong.
The current manuscript spans two volumes. The first follows roots, formation, Nairobi, university life, early community work, and the relationships that widened the world. The second follows migration to the United States, Indiana, education and university work, rugby, Florida, entrepreneurship, organizational work, and the continuing return to community.
The title is still being developed. The story and worldview come first.
Questions the book keeps returning to
What does belonging make possible?
How do people, families, teachers, mentors, teams, and communities shape what we believe we can become?
What happens when opportunity reaches us?
How can access become responsibility rather than individual advantage?
What do communities already know?
How do we recognize local wisdom and agency while still confronting the systems that constrain opportunity?
How do ideas become useful?
What turns a belief into a program, organization, partnership, institution, or next step that people can actually use?
